Career pathways for Aboriginal people in NSW Health

Support the professional development of your staff by providing them with opportunities to pursue further training and development with NSW Health.

It's important that your staff feel supported to pursue further learning and development opportunities in health. There are a range of programs, scholarships and health career pathways available that you can promote to those interested in pursuing a career in health.


NURSING AND MIDWIFERY

There are a number of scholarships on offer for Aboriginal people that are interested in pursuing or continuing their career in nursing & midwifery. These include:

For Aboriginal people wanting to study nursing or midwifery at university or for those currently studying in these areas at university, you may like to consider applying for the NSW Aboriginal Nursing and Midwifery Cadetship Program.

The cadetship offers: a study allowance, up to 12 weeks of full-time employment in your local hospital, support from an Aboriginal mentor and on-going employment with NSW Health upon completion of the program.

ALLIED HEALTH

The NSW Ministry of Health offers cadetship positions in the NSW Aboriginal Allied Health Cadetship Program for Aboriginal people living in NSW who are studying, or intending to study, an allied health undergraduate degree.

The Program involves Aboriginal students studying full-time in an undergraduate allied health course while undertaking paid employment in a NSW Public Health facility.

Health support roles

Many work roles in health are non-clinical roles. These roles support the delivery of health services and are critical to the effective functioning of the NSW Health system.

Health Support roles cover a wide range of areas and provide some great health career options including roles such as an Aboriginal Health Worker, a patient support assistant, an administrative worker or trade/maintenance roles.

School students

School students interested in a career in health are encouraged to talk with their Career Advisor or Aboriginal Education Coordinator. A traineeship or apprenticeship through TAFE may also be an option for consideration. Aboriginal medical workforce recruitment pathway

The Aboriginal Medical Workforce Recruitment Pathway is about linking Aboriginal medical graduates with support during the transition from medical school to prevocational trainee.

Aboriginal medical graduates applying for a prevocational training position in NSW are eligible to apply for the Aboriginal Medical Workforce pathway in NSW.

The program aims to support the transition from medical graduate to becoming a prevocational trainee in any one of the fifteen prevocational training networks or a rural preferential hospital in NSW where applicants identify that they have support.
