Aboriginal Population Health Training Initiative

Traineeships for the NSW Health Aboriginal Population Health Training Initiative are available for suitable Aboriginal candidates who have a tertiary qualification which meets the requirements for enrolment in a Master of Public Health.

Candidates of the program are recruited by Health Services (Local Health Districts and Speciality Networks). Trainees undertake three years of full-time population health work while undertaking part-time study (one day a week) towards a Master of Public Health, funded at a NSW university of their choice.

Funded by the NSW Government, this Initiative is part of the commitment to the National Partnership Agreement on Closing the Gap in Indigenous Health.

Paramedic: Ambulance Service of NSW

A range of paramedic career and training opportunities are available on the NSW Ambulance Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander candidates website. 

A designated pathway is available for Aboriginal people to apply for employment as a Trainee Paramedic, Qualified Paramedic, Trainee Patient Transport Officer or Trainee Control Centre Officer.

Aboriginal Environmental Health Officer Training Program

Aboriginal people in this program are employed full-time by a Public Health Unit or Local Council as a Trainee Environmental Health Officer.  

While employed, Trainees are given study leave to undertake a six-year Bachelor of Science (Environmental Health) part-time by distance learning through Western Sydney University.

Course fees (HECS) and other associated costs (including textbooks, travel, tutors and graduation costs) are covered by NSW Health and the partner Council or Public Health Unit.

Financial support is also available for Aboriginal people to study a Bachelor of Science (Environmental Health) who are not part of the traineeship through the NSW Health Aboriginal Environmental Health Scholarships.


NSW Aboriginal Mental Health Workforce Training Program

The NSW Health mental health traineeship program for Aboriginal people is an important workforce development strategy that aims to employ and train Aboriginal people as mental health professionals. Trainees work throughout the Local Health Districts and Specialty Health Networks to support the needs of Aboriginal communities across NSW.

The program is made up of three elements:

  • Workplace training and support
  • Undertaking a recognised University Bachelor of Health Science Mental Health Degree
  • Undertaking mandatory clinical placements and potential workplace rotations

NSW Aboriginal Mental Health Leadership Group

The NSW Aboriginal Mental Health Leadership Group (AMHLG) is made up of Aboriginal Mental Health Leaders from each Local Health Districts and Specialty Health Networks, who continue to support the Aboriginal Mental Health Workforce Training Program. The AMHLG also supports the Aboriginal mental health workforce in general, contributing to NSW Health's goals of growing the Aboriginal workforce across the state and salary bands, and increasing the cultural safety and accessibility of mental health services.
