Referees role

The purpose of referee checks is to confirm the information you have included in your application, explore any issues arising from the recruitment process and to obtain further information about your employment history. They can also be from your community where there is a limited employment history.

Referee checks usually occur over the phone, although written references may be acceptable in some circumstances.

Confirm details

Generally, at the interview, you will need to confirm the details of two referees with the panel. It is best to provide at least one of your recent supervisors or managers as a referee if possible.

There may be some instances where you are unable to provide details of a current supervisor or manager such as:

  • this is your first entry into the workforce
  • you are currently unemployed
  • you are returning to the workforce after a substantial break

If any of these scenarios apply to your situation you will be given the opportunity to provide alternative referee/s, such as a past supervisor or manager. The panel will be able to advise you on appropriate people for you to nominate as referees.

You should think about nominating a referee who can attest to your Aboriginality and connection to the community, particularly if you are applying for an Aboriginal identified or targeted position. This may be a community member or representative of an Aboriginal organisation.

If the panel is unable to make contact with your referee/s they may ask you to provide the details of someone else who can be contacted.

BulbImportant
  • It is important that you inform your referees that you are applying for a job in NSW Health and ask if they are willing to support your application as the selection panel may contact your referees to obtain details of your performance. When asking your referees to support your application, it is an opportunity to make sure you have their most recent contact details to provide to the interview panel.
  • Consider providing your referees with a copy of the position description so that they are prepared to provide relevant information to the selection panel.
